Moctar Doucouré is a Malian-born South African with an engineering degree in exploration geophysics from the Petroleum Institute of Algiers and a doctorate in geophysics from the University of Paris, France, followed by a postdoctoral Melon Fellowship in marine geophysics at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. His professional experience includes research using a variety of potential field techniques such as gravity and magnetics, computer applications and science/maths teaching. A particular focus of his research has been the subsurface structure of Africa through characterisation of its crust and mantle. Moctar has field experience throughout Africa as well as across the world’s oceans. He was a senior research officer in the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Cape Town; and the systems manager of the Centre for Interactive Graphical Computing of Earth Systems at UCT. He spend some time in De Beers Group Exploration as principal specialist and joined AEON in December 2008 as chief operating officer. He is currently managing director of AEON and associate-professor of geophysics at the Nelson Mandela University. His research projects span a range of academic and applied interests with emphasis on the African continent and its off-shore environment.
