Duncan Miller holds Ph.Ds in both Materials Engineering and Archaeology. He is the former Director of Research Development, University of Cape Town, a position he resigned in 2000 to return to full-time academic activity. His research has included the record of Holocene sea-level change and its impact on coastal resource availability; rock drilling with diamonds; African indigenous mining and metals production; source tracing of archaeological materials; and the social impact of changing mining legislation on small-scale miners. He is currently a Principal Research Officer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, and runs his own gemstone company. In AEON he will continue to research African indigenous mining and metals production, the economic impact and social history of pre-colonial mining, and the effects of changing mining governance on modern small-scale miners in Africa.
