Citizen Science:

Integrating Citizen Science (community engagement in scientific activities) into existing community structures contributes to community capacity building in environmental resource management. As part of the AEON Karoo Shale Gas Baseline Study (2015-2018), Citizen Science (CS) training in one of the Karoo precincts (Cradock) enabled engagement of selected youths in collection and analysis of groundwater scientific data. This is being extended to further community participation in decision-making forums on groundwater, health, and human settlements. Expansion of the CS concept through digital tools (such as the Xoras App on mobile device) towards data collection, visualisation and analysis approaches, contributes to the institutional research themes of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainable Livelihoods and Innovation and the digital Economy.
